Cluttered Homes Such As Mine

I've heard it said a messy desk is a sign of genius.

I hope that's also true of cluttered homes such as mine,

with the loose snapshots next to the open photo albums

on the coffee table, waiting for names to match faces.

And all the pieces of a dormant yard-art project on

top of the sewing machine under the unhemmed jeans.

As any true quilter, I have several undertakings

in various stages of completion, blanketing the spare

table in the dining room, each challenging the color

wheel.

And the papers covering every blank surface! The

snippets of quotes I think of as poetry seeds, quietly

calling on me to find an appropriate place for them

to bloom in my poems.
