Exercise In Futility

My pointless search for a topic

Of which I could boldly expound on

Lead me down a short rabbit hole

Like your proverbial moron

Then found I was circumvented!

That snooty hare had no desire

To assist in my pursuit of

Themes of the type that inspire.

So, defeated, and frankly, bored

I return to this page and pen

To scratch out this little ditty

And bring this poem to an end.

An exercise in the book Ordinary Genius, A guide for the poet within

by Kim Addonizio

Pick from a long list of “first sentences” to start off a poem

I chose “I sought a theme and sought for it in vain.”
