I-5 Standards

Proper pines in the distance patiently waiting in line along a fence

Yellow maples stoically watching cars whiz by

Tall poplars bent forward as if to listen more closely

Red alders peeking out to get a glimpse of the goings-on

Wispy birches stretching for the sky

Moss-covered larches flailing in confusion

Elegant spruce glancing sideways at the travelers

Sad hemlock tilting in acknowledgment

Out of place bamboo scrambling to find its way home

Full willow hunched against the rain

Some are gathered at the side of the freeway

Like spectators at a marathon finish line,

Ready to slap hands as they go by.

(I was surprised at how many people didn't know that

standard is a synonym for pillar)
