About That Time

I couldn’t hear enough about that time

When life was easy and everyone knew

The rules and how to act to get along

When to speak out, when to shoo.

The tales about that time gave me courage.

I felt I would eventually figure out

The whys and the wherefores, the system,

That I would find my way about.

I loved to hear about that time,

When stepping in line, marching to the beat

Was what kept us all safe at home,

Was what prevented our shameful retreat.

But it was about that time I began to see

Not all will be allowed our own place.

Some will be driven away from home,

No longer would we see a welcoming face.
