One-Day Workshop Collection

Write Around Portland One-day/Two hour Workshop

2 minute free write

Prompts:

In my pocket…”

or

You can’t tell by looking…”

If you look in my pocket

You would never guess

That the seeds are from my grandson

Who left quite a mess.

He’s three years old, you see

And was elated and gleeful

To help me pot new plants

In every empty hole that was freeful.

8 minute free write

Prompts:

In the woods…”

or

Through the garden gate…”

or

Write about one of the plant objects passed around the table.

The many shapes of green. Elongated and prickly and stiff. Soft and fragile. Delicate and fuzzy as a lamb’s ear. Always the background for vibrant ad sometimes fragrant blossoms. The bright white petals dancing in circles around a brilliant yellow center. Safire blue bells dangling down from upright stems. Lipstick red trumpets looking skyward. Without green they would all be fallen petals faded by age.

Haiku exercise

or

Prompts:

Every spring…”

or

As the nights gets shorter…”

My mind has gone blank

As I sit here thinking of

Words that might make sense

Two words from the bag

“Life” and “tides” signify

Beginnings and ends

Hushed concentration

Stills the room and makes waiting

A silent pleasure.

Kind proprietors

Open doors to hopeful writers

Grateful for this place.

I sent a copy of this to the café where the workshop was held. They were normally closed on this day but they opened their doors just to us.

Haiku is “yes” to

Sharing feelings old and new

Birds on the highway

Duck their heads as cars whiz by.

Keep right of the white line.

10 minute free write

A bag was passed around the table that contained strips of paper on which singles words had been written. We were instructed to take three of the strips and try to use the words in our writing. My words were: Frog, bluebird and cool.

Walking down the path that

Leads to the cool, blue pond

I glimpse creatures dart about,

Like the frog, of which I am fond.

The bluebird serenades me

And lifts my spirits high

With his wondrous sweet song

Which always elicits a sigh.

5 minute free write

Prompts:

5 minutes from now…”

or

5 things I love…”

Five things I love are, of course

My daughter, my son, and two grandkids,

Which actually only adds up to four,

So I guess I’ll admit I love the one behind my eyelids
