Unmet Challenge

I threw out a challenge that I could not meet:

Write about hearing what dropped from the eaves.

But so used, am I, to blocking out noises

I kept forgetting to pick up the voices

And place them upon empty pages,

Recording the things in which they engage-ed.

So here I am with only an hour to write,

And all I have is this paltry poem to recite.

I threw out the challenge to write

a poem about something overheard.
