Mystic Dream

"Why were you hiding from me?” I asked

“Your thunder was too heavy,” she said.

“I couldn’t lift my head under the weight.”

"What were you wearing?”

“My raincoat leaked, and the storm swept me away.

         I floated under a bridge.

I blew on the waves to make them stop.”

“What did you hear?”

“I heard the cold, steel hammer splashing

          on my shoulders.

“I could not push against the shouting.”

“What were you eating?”

I was swallowing the slices of guilt you put

         in my book.

They stained the words I meant to write.”

“Who was with you?”

“I was alone in your arms, don’t you remember?

No, you were gone long before you

         offered me up.”

“Where were you going?”

“I was that speck in your eye, the one that

           made you cry.

I was going to make you see me.”

“Who were you in my dream?”

         “There was no dream.”

Who were you in my dream?

Why were you hiding?

Who was with you?

Where were you going?
